November Garden

Our November garden is one of promise – the hard labour of clearing, composting, bed preparing and building is almost complete and nearly all the summer crops have been sown.  Melon, winter and summer squash, runner and bush beans and cucumber seedlings are slowly but surely being planted out into the said prepared beds.  With sowing season pretty much at a close, I've had to hurry with getting eggplant and a few other essentials into newspaper pots.  Our summer planting season may have begun a little later, but it ends right along with everyone elses...

Bell Pepper...

We have been having a frustrating time with the tiresome snails and cutworm...  I have come to loathe the creatures as they continue to feast on our young transplants and seedlings.  This battle must be won, so we keep a stiff upper lip and begin again.  Gardening is all about success and failure and failure and success.  No use getting down in the dumps – I couldn't quit even if I wanted to as our growing family is always needing nourishment!  When I speak of our 'growing' family, I am not actually speaking about our human family.  We have recently acquired chickens which need plenty of healthy greens in their diet.  Having chickens has been a life long dream of ours, so to realise it the other day was simply delightful.  Nancy is in charge of the chooks while Mom and I keep our hand on the garden.

Coriander...

Three weeks ago I was fortunate enough to have a compost making lesson with a gardening neighbour.  I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and came home all fired up to make our own heaps and get growing in earnest!  We've always had a compost heap of sorts, but it was wonderful to learn the proper way to make a heap which should be ready to use in just four weeks.  Compost is amazing and I love it – not everyone around here shares my obsession for this incredible plant food, but they all appreciate it.  Though I must add that Mom is also very excited about having compost available for her little garden.  Dad does his bit by carting manure and other things to our compost making section and slashing grass to dry and grass to use straightaway.  If he has time, he'll help Mom and I with building tripods, clearing new bed areas or anything else that is just too challenging for us girls.

Gem Squash...

The peas were finished halfway through last month and the broad beans only remain because of the valuable beans which are drying on the plants for next season's planting.  I had to clear out most of the bean plants to make space for the cucumbers.  I've just left two or three bushes to dry.

We are enjoying our strawberries most of all.  There are times when we get frustrated when the plants don't produce well or the berries get nibbled by slugs or caterpillars. But on the whole, I think they're not doing too badly.  Mom picks a small bowlful nearly every morning, washes, dries and removes the calyx off each berry and places the whole lot in an ice cream tub in the freezer.  Come a hot day, we open a tub of strawberries and blend them up with homemade yoghurt, frozen banana, paw paw and pineapple, a squeeze of orange juice and a good dollop of pure honey.  Strawberry smoothies are such wonderful and healthy treats in our home.
Fresh berries are eaten in our breakfast once a week or so or for snacktime.

Mom's two raspberry bushes are doing beautifully.  The berries have just begun to ripen and Dad had the first one the other day.  We added another three smaller bushes to our bed of raspberries and another two will be planted out later today.

A few other smaller crops include radish, beetroot, Swiss chard, carrots, lettuce and herbs.

Both the runner and bush beans are sporting beautiful flowers – a truly beautiful sign of the goodness to come!

And the sweet peas we planted in Autumn are flowering prolifically along the fence and in the kitchen garden.  Mom loves to gather her bunch of loveliness every morning and being able to give a gift of pretty sweet peas to someone is too glorious for words!

We really do feel like we are finally enjoying a homestead life – our days are simple and sweet yet extremely busy.  Everyone falls into bed after a day of breathing in fresh air, making meals together in the kitchen, looking after our little animals, working in the garden and helping each other with school work.  Sewing, crafting and leisure activities happen somewhere inbetween...
This is where the Lord has placed us for however long He deems fit.  Now we enjoy it and work with it and ‘bloom where we’re planted’!

I hope you enjoyed reading about our toils, tribulations and triumphs – please feel free to share what is happening in your container/kitchen/large farm garden with me in the comments section.  I love to read about other people's experiences and be inspired!

With much love,

Kelly-Anne

A Beautiful Award

Quite some time ago I had the unexpected and very welcome surprise of being awarded this beautiful award by a fairly new young blogger, Khloe Grace.  Khloe blogs at ‘All Things Good’ and writes about crafty things, recipes, devotions, fashion and more.  You can visit her here…

The rules for this particular award, the ‘Elegant Blogger Award’, are featured below…

When you receive the award, you must link back to ‘All Things Good’ blog and the blog that nominated you.
Display the award button in your post.
Answer all of the twelve standard questions listed by the blogger who created the award.
Nominate twelve other bloggers you think should receive the ‘Elegant Blogger Award’.
Notify them that they have been awarded.

The Questions…

What made you decide to start blogging?

In April 2009 I began blogging.  This was after my mother’s special friend started her blog, Back to Ancient Ways.
At this stage I didn’t really understand how the computer worked or how to get around the internet, so being able to write, post photographs and change the look of a background page all on the web seemed too good to be true!
After speaking to my parents about the possibility of starting my own blog, I contacted Aunty Linnie for help in how to get going.  The rest is history!

What is your fashion style?

I love being a girl and wearing feminine clothes such as dresses and peasant tops in floral prints.  Mom, Nancy and I are currently working on sewing our own clothing so we can make items to suit our own personal style.

Where is your favorite place to shop?

I don’t actually have a favourite place to shop – usually it is wherever the Lord leads…  I always ask Him for guidance and to help me find bargains and the right clothing which will be comfortable and stylish, yet modest.

What would your ideal amount of blog followers be?

When I was in my second year of blogging, I began to make friends with other bloggers around the world.  I noticed that their blogs were a lot more popular than mine, judging from the amount of followers they had on their sidebar.  But I soon realised blogging is about the journey, not about how many people decide to join.  From then on I tried to stay focused on what really mattered, and that was writing and sharing encouraging experiences.  Even if only two people read my posts, that was sufficient.  My blog has grown considerably since then and I still get excited when I get a new follower, but I am not driven by this at all.  I also don’t try to post to please anyone, but rather what the Lord puts on my heart to write and what would please Him.

What are your talents?

I believe that everyone has gifts and talents given to them by the Lord.
Everyone is different and everyone excels at different things - this is why I do not feel that I need to share any of the things I find myself ‘talented’ in – I fear this will give the impression that I am boasting.
But if you had to ask me to list a few of the many things I am passionate about, then I’m afraid you’re in for a long haul!  I have so many interests – working in the garden, cooking, preserving (making jams, chutneys and pickles), crafting, sewing, writing, music, reading, blogging…  And the list goes on:-)

Are you a leader or a follower?

I am naturally a leader – I don’t know if being the eldest of six children has anything to do with this, but each day I try to become more of a follower and submit more to the authority of my elders.

What is one of your favorite quotes?

When I was about ten and we were living in Sedgefield, I decided I would write little notes with verses and quotes on to pop into my dad’s lunchbox each day.  I still remember writing this quote for my dad one day…

It is special to me because God really has done the impossible in our lives and has answered so many of our prayers that I can’t even begin to recall…

“If you are anxious, remember that with God all things are possible!  Nothing is impossible with HIM!”

Amen!

Do you have a favorite book or book series?

I am not a great reader, although I certainly would like to become more of one.
To be very honest, though, once I start a good book, I get so engrossed that all my chores, school work and hobbies go by the wayside!  But a few of my favourite books include Christy by Catharine Marshall (the most inspiring book I’ve ever read) and A Lineage of Grace by Francine Rivers as well as the ‘Anne of Green Gables’ series by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Out of all of the synonyms for elegant, which would you describe yourself with (smart - stylish - dressy - graceful - dainty - fine)?

I really don’t think I could answer this question 100% correctly.  Each day I pray for grace to become a woman with more of a gentle and quiet spirit (graceful).

What is your favorite flower?

I love all flowers, but I think sweet peas, pink roses, poppies and pansies the prettiest of all...

What is something none of your followers know about you?

I have no secrets as such - or any that I could share with you that would be interesting, but perhaps you didn’t know that I began to play the cello earlier this year and dream of becoming an accomplished cellist and playing with my sisters…:-)  We love music in our house!

The bloggers I have chosen to nominate for this award are listed below…

52 Crafts in 52 Weeks - Week Thirty Three

It always feels like such an achievement to type the week number in the title line of a blog post.
This year has been a good one craftwise – we have tried many different crafts we most likely would never have tried had we not had a challenge to hold us accountable.  I admit that at times it has taken tremendous will power to keep going and, although we are still a bit behind, I feel we have definitely achieved and are still continuing to achieve what we set out to do.

October was our busy month in terms of family birthdays with Sofia on the 12th, Nancy on the 14th and Dad on the 25th.

I thought I would share the easel card I made for Nancy with you.

I have always loved the ‘window’ idea many crafters use on their cards, but just never felt brave enough to try it.  This time around I was determined to experiment with a new technique.  And as I love (and I mean loooove) easel cards, I decided to turn this simple card into something spectacular.  However, I very quickly realised that if I ever want to make a window card again, I cannot make it an easel card too...  Fortunately it still looks alright!  LOL!

When is your birthday?

With much crafty love,
Kelly-Anne

52 Crafts in 52 Weeks – Week Thirty Two

With October almost at an end and Christmas fast approaching, it is time to begin turning our thoughts to all things Festive.  Mom, Nancy and I have been going through all her and Granny’s old Christmas magazines the last few days, looking for some fun projects to make over the coming season.

This weekend will see us older girls in the kitchen baking our Christmas fruit cake.  After having great success last year, we have established the baking of our own Christmas cake as a firm tradition.  We’ll have to give some thought to its decorating, though...

I started off this week with some festive sewing.  The beautiful fabric reindeer ornament featured in the December 2012 issue of Crafts Beautiful was the project I decided to undertake and I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the process.  My mom helped me with the finishing touches as I am not 100% comfortable with attaching ears and eyes to any stuffed animal!  As it is my little reindeer (which has been christened Rosy) has to live with a terrible nose...
I used my gorgeous vintage fabric to make Rosy so you might say she is quite a special reindeer...

With only ten more weeks left in 2013, I’d better get a move on with sharing the projects I tackled this year!  There are a few Christmassy ideas coming this way very soon, so if you’re feeling a bit uninspired to start with your festivities, be sure to take a look at the loveliness I have planned for next week:-)

Do you celebrate Christmas?  If so, what is your favourite thing about this season?
