Going Guinea

Some of my followers – those who have been here since the very beginning – may remember our adding guinea pigs to our household.  You may then recall this post where I shared photographs of our new ‘families’ of guinea pigs.  Toffee and Fudge were our first pair – we later discovered that they were in fact two males and thus prone to having the occasional dispute over dominance.  By that stage we were so attached to our new babies that we just couldn’t think of getting rid of either one of them...  And so we made trips to two different pet shops on opposite ends of the peninsula to buy a female of completely different blood for each of our two lonely males.  After introducing the males to their new brides, our guinea pig farm grew from strength to strength...and strength – ok, you get the picture!  Many adorable babies were born and then sold to new homes during those first years.

However, Toffee and Candy, his darling lady, died at the beginning of this year due to exposure to excessive heat.  We were all devastated; Candy and Toffee had been part of our lives for the past three or so years.  I actually nursed Candy back to health after she battled against an illness, so she especially was very dear to me.

Fudge and Cocoa and their three pups (yes, that’s what we call baby guinea pigs), also suffered heat stroke to some extent – it really was heart wrenching to see them so ill!  I learnt a very hard but valuable lesson that day, one I am sure I shall not soon forget.  Fortunately they recovered, but are much weaker than they were before.

We always maintained a strict rule that no baby, however adorable he or she may be, should ever be kept – reason being that we would never be able to feed and look after them all.  Female guinea pigs are able to birth new litters of pups every 64 days or so.  But when Cocoa had a smooth white pup with a bit of black and brown on her face that was born completely blind in one eye, we knew we had to keep her.

We named this little girl guinea pig, Jewel, and sometime in March this year she had her first pup which we called ‘Hot Cross Bun’, as she was born over Easter time.  Everyone fell in love with little Bun – no one wanted her to go to a new home as she already had one!  As Fudge and Cocoa are getting on in age and pretty much at the end of their reproductive years, Hot Cross Bun is kept with them for company and to help them stay young:-)  Jewel got her own dear chap last month when we heard of a long–haired male with the same colourings as her who needed a new home.  We named him Mr Knightly, after Jane Austen’s hero in her book, Emma.

New pups are always anticipated with my enthusiasm in our home – what colour and markings will the next lot have?  Will they be fluffy or smooth?  Over the years we have learnt to care for them better and see that they are kept healthy.  Our guinea pigs like to graze in the closed run my dad built for them.  Sometimes they run free for 30 minutes or so in the small veggie patch, eating stray grass and weeds (and sometimes a spinach or lettuce leaf when we aren’t looking).  We always have someone watching them to see that they don’t fight with each other, run off or eat something harmful.

Going Guinea is a four part mini-series to be featured on Beautiful Girlhood.  In part two I will be discussing a few of the pros and cons that come with keeping guinea pigs and how to know if your family can really commit to looking after them...

...I thought I would share a few of the photographs I took this morning of Jewel’s newest pups, Snow White (who is pure white with pink eyes – a first in our four years of breeding) and Wafer (who is chestnut in colour with white markings), in tea cups and sugar bowls.  These two are very sweet and proved to be gorgeous models for me!

Aren’t they gorgeous?

This week the lovely Miss Tane at Fifth out of Ten celebrates 100 followers!  I am honoured to be among those 100 - I find her blog so inspiring and beautiful and always enjoyable to visit.

Miss Tane has decided to host a fun once off photo challenge to celebrate and her theme is 'cats'.  Pop over to her delightful blog here for more details!

Above is my entry for her contest...  This is the adorably fluffy Sarafina kitty - perhaps not the brightest feline around but certainly quite beautiful:)  Everybody falls in love with her cuddly nature and fluffy white coat!

The Life of Izzie Part Six & Final

The need for speed...and lots of fun:)  That’s what Jack Russells are made of!

I am probably the worst doggie blogger on the net.  Months have gone by without so much as a woof from my end of the tail.  How are all my friends out there?

Mom thinks that I have grown too much – there is no more puppy around here anymore!  That’s right; I am a gown up dog now!  I celebrated my first birthday on the fifteenth of January, and a whole year with my family on the 12th of March!

I am a happy pooch.  Pampered and spoilt some might say, but definitely loved.  I am a valued member of the pack now.  My whole family love and play with me and think well of me.  I have earned my spot as a doggie companion to my humans – I give them lots of cuddles and kisses and take them for walks.  One of my favourite jobs around here is keeping an eye on Sofia (and her lunch) and chasing away any monkey that may wander into the veggie patch.

Sofia likes to throw pinecones for me.  She’s so sweet and thoughtful!

Yes...I have a good life.

Since I last wrote, lots of new things have happened.  Firstly, I attended my fist dog show with Mom.  We had a great time doing a 3.7km fun dog walk to support Animal Welfare, and an informal dog show.  Mom entered me in the Best Medium Dog, in which I was placed second (woof!) and in the Best Trick class, which I won!  Mom was given a huge container for dog food as well as plenty of Hill’s dog food to fill it.  I got treats and chew toys, a Frisbee and fold-up water bowls.  Treat bags and shampoo were also in the bag...  My family was so proud of me!  Although the walk and part of the dog show was rained out, I had lots of fun.  I got to meet new canines and humans and show off my talent!  Mom and her sisters, Aunt Beth and Aunt Nancy, were soaked to the skin, but kept smiling and drying me off.  Aww...they really love me:)  Grandpa did his part by dropping us off – he certainly wasn’t going to walk with a pack of barking dogs in the pouring rain!  BOL!  (Barking out loud!)

Mom and I – soaked in the pouring rain.  Here we are getting ready for the show!

Secondly, we adopted a new canine.  Her name is Abby and she is really old – at least a good many years older than me, so I can’t really call her ‘sister’.  Instead I call her ‘Granny’.  She doesn’t mind in the least and keeps me in check with all her so called ‘wisdom’ which she apparently has gleaned over a hundred dog years or so.  Ha.  She loves to come for walks with Mom, Gran and the Aunts.  She doesn’t run around and fetch sticks like I do, she just ‘trots’ which is like a medium-fast to medium-slow walk.  She says it is called a ‘power walk’ and helps to keep off the extra kilos senior dogs are prone to piling on:-)    She’s quite a sprightly old lady, though!

This is Abby.  She looks quite good for her age, doesn’t she?

“Haha!  Good joke:)” Abby and I had such fun in the forest!

Yesterday we went pinecone hunting (winter is on the way which calls for plenty of warm fires...) and Abby came along.  We got so excited when out came the leads and water bottles.  When we were invited to climb in the car, we went crazy!  We love going places in the car.  We drove to a nearby forest to look for pinecones and to have a little snack.  We didn’t even need leads – we ran around and played the whole time!

We enjoy going places in the car...

As I once told you in a previous Dog Blog post, I usually sleep in my Mom’s bed.  But then she bought me my own bed and made me sleep in the lounge!  That didn’t last long because I cried and whined for her in the early morning which kind of put Grandpa out of spirits:-)  Now my bed is in Mom’s room, and I sleep in it half the night.  The other half is spent under Mom’s duvet, all cuddled up.  She’s always fast asleep when I sneak in, so she is never able to push me out!   When she wakes up in the morning, there I am all comfy in HER bed:)  I have to smile...

I’ve gotten over a lot of my fear of water – as long as it isn’t moving and crashing!

Other than that, all is well.  I have such a fun, happy life that I really couldn’t ask for more...except for maybe a few more treats and training sessions, as those help me further my knowledge of how to be a clever canine.

And now, here comes the sad part.  I have outgrown doggie blogging.  Mom promises to keep you updated, though.  She says I am big now and I obviously don’t have time in my busy life to regularly write:-)  Thus, I bid you farewell and a send plenty of wet nose kisses!

Paws up!
Izzie:-)

Note from Kelly:  Welcome to my lovely new followers!  In case you're wondering, Izzie is my Jack Russell Terrier.  I have had her for over a year now and we are great friends!  Click here to read previous 'Izzie's Blog' posts!  Enjoy:)

The Life of Izzie: Part 4

Hello everyone, it's Izzie here again with another update on my life as a Jack Russell Terrier pup living on a farm with loads of people and animals.  You may notice this post is very late, but it is absolutely all Moms’ fault, not mine!

^ Aunt Rebekah and I playing in the field.  Just after this photo was taken, I jumped up onto her and knocked her to the ground, hoping for a game but all I got were screams and a rather flustered Mom who came to her sister’s rescue.  Sigh.  I really was hoping for a game...

^ Posing.

The family haven’t been up to very much lately, they’ve been very busy on the farm, hence the late post and so I’ve been doing things on my own quite a bit. However, Mom always does some sort of training with me each day otherwise I become completely out-of-control and misbehaved:( (I’ve mastered a number of tricks and now I’m on to learning how to dance on my hind legs!)

^ Winter is cuddle time!

About two weeks ago, the weather was so miserable and cold that everyone stayed cooped up inside with the fire going and I had to stay inside too, otherwise I think I would have frozen! My special spot was under the wood stove and that is pretty much where I stayed till Mom came to get me for a walk or to take me to bed. I love bedtime, when I snuggle up under Mom’s duvet and dream about warm days and things to chase.

^ I am so glad the weather has warmed up a little – I love sunshine!

But now I have happy days again that involve the morning milking session (I am allowed to come with and lend a paw in the mornings now!), chores done by the family while I sleep under the wood stove, followed by a short training session. Later I’ll go for a walk or play games with Mom in the garden. I usually get a bone to chew on while the family is busy with school etc.

Unfortunately I have had news from Mom that I am going to have an operation this month – I have to be sterilised and that involves a whole day without food!  I don’t really like the vet because each time I’ve gone there so far, it was to have an injection.  The cats went last month and they said it wasn’t too bad, but I’m not too sure...I’ll let you know though!

^ How do you like my pawtograph?

Before that happens though, my Mom and two of her sisters are going to visit friends of theirs in Sedgefield on Wednesday and they’re TAKING ME!! I have a play-date with Scamper, their family dog, who is a Border Collie! Be sure to check back soon for some photos of our fun together and to meet them now, visit their new blogs here and here!

Till then,
Izzie
