Thoughtful Thursday

One of the first evidences of a real lady, is that she should be modest.  By modesty we mean that she shall not say, do, nor wear anything that would cause her to appear gaudy, ill-bred, or unchaste.  There should be nothing about her to attract unfavourable attention, nothing in her dress or manner that would give a man an excuse for vulgar comment.  When we dress contrary to the rule of modesty we give excuse for unwholesome thoughts in the mind of those who look upon us, and every girl who oversteps these bounds makes herself liable to misunderstanding and insult, though she may be innocent of any such intention.”

~ Elizabeth Gaskell, excerpt from North and South

Wishing each of my sweet readers a very blessed and "thoughtful" Thursday!

~ In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.  1 Timothy 2:9 ~

Oh, Kelly-Anne, this is a topic so near and dear to me, especially living in South Florida where there is increasingly less modesty (along with our culture here in the States). Oh, that God would encourage us all to glorify Him in all we do, say, and wear! Hugs!

Beautiful and inspiring words. I was just trying to explain this to my son relating to his girlfriend. Should the opportunity arise, perhaps I can direct her here.

Awesome quote! Though it makes me think of one of my favorite lines: "Susan Lightfoot had been seen with artificial flowers in her bonnet, thereby giving evidence of a vain and giddy character." Ahem.

I'm trying to explain to my kids what modesty means lately, and why it's important. The issue arose when I was trying to buy shorts for my 5-year-old daughter and ended up getting her boy shorts because all the little girl shorts were way too short. What is wrong with people that they would make shorts for little girls that show off their underwear if they bend over? And then people freak out and wonder why there are so many pedophiles around? Um, duh? Dress your little girl like a floozy, people will think she's a floozy.

That's an awesome quote--thank you! It really helps to be reminded that I'm not the only one trying to dress modestly (I'm a college student and it's kind of tough out there . . .)
