Belle ~ Review

I am very excited to share this with you today, dearest readers…

I have wanted to write a review on this incredibly beautiful film for such a long time…

I love period dramas, especially those relating to British history…

However, as some of you may know, finding a clean film with good morals and values can be very difficult.

But oh!  Belle is a gorgeous story and a movie I would highly recommend.

I was utterly entranced by this stunning movie; it captured my interest from the very beginning, and I was drawn into the story through the heavenly music, composed by Rachel Portman, the extraordinary costumes and superb acting...

I would love to share my thoughts on this beautiful film with you…  I am always thrilled to discover good films like this one, and feel certain you will love it too.

I will just add that we didn’t show this movie to the younger girls, as the story is a little too far above them and explores the issue of slavery, which could be quite disturbing to the young viewer...  I would personally recommend it for ages 12 and up…

And as with many period dramas, there is unfortunately a lot of cleavage shown.

~

This is a film is based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay, who was the illegitimate daughter of an enslaved African woman and Captain Sir John Lindsay, a British Naval officer.

After her mother died, she was taken by her father and placed in the care of her uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mansfield, at Kenwood House, an estate in Hampstead.  Lord Mansfield was said to have been the most powerful man in England, besides the king.

Dido was raised as their daughter and brought up as a true gentlewoman.

After her father’s death, she inherited a substantial fortune, which meant she wouldn’t have to marry beneath her station in order to secure a living, as Lord and Lady Mansfield believed no gentleman would wish to marry a woman of colour…

It was her cousin, Elizabeth Murray, who had to find a suitable husband of great fortune as she was left penniless once her father remarried…

Sarah Gaden is Elizabeth Murray, Dido’s cousin, who too is under the guardianship of Lord and Lady Mansfield.

A young man named John Davinier, son of the local vicar, was an aspiring lawyer and an apprentice to the earl during the case of the Zong ship, which involved the insurance payment for slaves thrown overboard of the ship carrying them.

The ship’s company claimed to have been low on water, and thus the slaves were disposed of as if they were nothing but worthless cargo…

Davinier took a keen interest in this case, and after speaking to Dido about it and informing her of all that he knew, he was dispelled from the house and told never to speak with Dido again…

Tom Wilkinson plays the role of Dido’s uncle, Lord William Mansfield to absolute perfection.

He was the Lord Chief Justice of England at that time, and was presented with the case of the Zong ship from the lower court…  He was one of the most powerful men in England, and his decision could bring an end to the horrific slave trade…

He wanted to shelter Dido from the case he was judging to protect her and

wanted her to be happy and find her place within society without compromising on an undesirable marriage…

As the story unfolds, one comes to appreciate this great man for who he truly is

“What is right – can never be impossible…”  Captain Sir John Lindsay to William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield

Emily Watson is delightful in her role as Lady Elizabeth Mansfield, Dido’s aunt…

I love her quiet and gentle nature and how dearly she loves her nieces, respects her husband

and fills a needful place within their hearts and lives…

I really enjoyed Emily Watson in her role in War Horse and Miss Potter…and she was simply superb in Belle

Sam Reid plays John Davinier.  To say that I loved his character would be an understatement!

John Davinier was the son of the local clergyman, and an aspiring lawyer, under the tutelage of Lord Mansfield during the case of the Zong massacre…  He is honest and true and not afraid to stand up for what he believes to be right...

"Yes!  I love her with every breath I breathe!"  John to Lord Mansfield

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is the beautiful Dido Belle, the lady whom this story is all about…

She is not just a fictional character, but a woman who lived and influenced society…

Dido is a passionate young woman, and is not afraid to stand up for what she believes.

I will let you find out more about lovely Dido…I know you will love her as dearly as I do!

Penelope Wilton as Aunt Mary…

You may recognise her from Wives and Daughters or Pride and Prejudice (2005).

She too loved Dido and sympathised with her, especially when Dido admitted she loved a man of neither fortune nor rank.
~

One of the many reasons I love this film so much, is the beautiful story it portrays.

Doing the right thing is never easy, but it is good, and in this case, powerful too…

It is not romantic in a sense that it is all the film is about – there is more to it than just a man and a woman of different stations learning what love is truly worth.

It is about coming out of a society that controlled how a person lived, whom they married, and what they did and standing up for what is correct.

 About the Painting…  {Source}

The 1779 painting, once thought to be by Johann Zoffany, is now attributed to an unknown artist. The painting hung in Kenwood House until 1922 and now hangs at Scone Palace in Perthshire, Scotland. It was one of the first European portraits to portray a black subject on an equal eye-line with a white aristocrat, though distinctions are implied by the poses, as Elizabeth's "formality and bookishness are contrasted with the wild and exotically turbanned 'natural' figure of Belle."

The painting is replicated in the film with the faces of the actresses portraying the characters replacing those in the original. Dido's finger-to-cheek gesture is absent in the fictionalised version. The original picture is shown on screen at the end of the film.

A Few of my Favourite Things in...March

Hello friends and a very happy April to you!
I know many of my readers are so happy to finally welcome spring to their different parts of the world after a chilly winter,
while I am enjoying the delights of Autumn and planning a few exciting projects to undertake during the cooler days which are fast approaching...

How quickly March flew by!
I can't believe I am sitting down to write yet another 'Few of my Favourite Things' post for this year and starting to organise and pack my things for a short trip away...

~

This month...

...I shared a tutorial for making paper beads on my friend, Paige's blog, Sunday Best and All the Rest...

...I participated in Stephanie's lovely tea cup exchange for the first time and received a beautiful tea cup...
This exchange was such fun and I met wonderful and inspirational ladies through the blog party which followed...

~

Heartmade's blog was a little quiet in March while I busily worked on creating stock for while I am away...
But here are a few things I created which I didn't get to share with you...

Sweet elephant softies

Fabric house ornaments

My sewing machine was indeed humming this month!  I purchased some pretty new fabrics to make peasant tops for myself and just finished the last one today!
I look forward to showing you the end results sometime soon!

We enjoyed a few yummy tea breaks...

And plenty of baking...  Recipe coming soon!

Nancy and I played at a small concert with our string ensemble group...
After much consideration, I have actually laid aside my cello as life has been getting very full and I wasn't able to practice as much I needed to...
It was certainly wonderful to play with other strings and to be a part of the beautiful sound of instruments ~ I will always remember this concert fondly!

I shared a tutorial for making these beautiful decoupage eggs which my sisters and I enjoyed putting together!

...And photographs of our Easter tree...

I also wrote about the true meaning of Easter and how important it is to celebrate giving thanks to Jesus for what He so lovingly did on the cross for us.

We had a wonderful afternoon out and I captured some special memories with my camera...

The little girls played dress-up together...

~

...And so the beautiful month of March came to an end...

Thank you so much for your kind visits and comments ~ I give thanks to Jesus for each and every one of you and the wonderful blessing that you are to me!

May April be a blessed month for you!

With love,

A Few of My Favourite Things in…February

“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold:  when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”

-         Charles Dickens

Happy first of March, dear friends!

As clichéd as it may sound, just where has the time gone to…?
I can scarcely believe how swiftly this beautiful month has flown by!

February never used to be one of my favourite months of the year, but I have come to change my outlook on it as the Lord has graciously showed me how important it is to enjoy every passing moment…

It is always lovely to look back on a month gone by…  I love to stand back and review it – I love to see how I’ve grown as a person or in my walk with God, or a few ways in which I need to grow…
…Or smile at the wonderful new friends I’ve had the privilege of making or the fun projects I’ve been blessed to be able to try!

Thus…here is the month that was…

 Sunset, taken from our deck...

February…

Such a beautiful, challenging, amazing, difficult, happy, sad, inspiring, and truly wonderful month!
A month of sunny and rainy weather…quiet and busy moments…  A month of waking up to darker mornings as our part of the world begins to trade places with the north and autumn comes once again…

~

Sometimes I wonder what the Lord must think of me…  I am so frail and weak and my understanding of Him is so narrow – will I ever see Him in all His majesty with my limited vision, or understand His incredible love for me with my small human mind…?

But I know that His love for me is unfailing and unwavering.  It is unstoppable and unconditional.

February was the month of love…

I am so thankful that Jesus’ love is everyday – not just on a certain day or for a limited number of days only – it is always and forever - it never fades away.

For me, I was truly more aware of Christ’s great love for His children during this month, which in turn lead me to seek Him further and spend more time in His Word.
I once read how crucial it is for a young lady to ‘submerge’ herself in the Word of God during her single years...  Not only should she never be idle, for idle hands can become destructive, but she should spend more than sufficient time with the Lord so that she neither sways to the left nor the right…

~ “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”  James 4:8 ~

The Enemy is real – the Bible says he prowls around searching for those he can destroy – I don’t want to be one of those people.  Thus, I need to make certain that my roots are in solid ground and that my faith is strong so that when the storm comes, for come it must, I will not be blown down by the first gust.

I want my thoughts to be pure and beautiful and reflect the glory of God, and I want to radiate His wondrous love, but how can I do that if I’m not being filled with His love each day?

Among other things, this is an outline of what I’ve been learning of late – we never stop learning and I hope that I will grow stronger in my faith with each passing day!

~

I thank Jesus for the special Titus 2 women I have been blessed to meet over the past month or so…  Dear ladies, thank you so very much for your beautiful encouragement and for writing what is true!
And I am also very thankful for the lovely sisters in Christ whom I have also just recently met – you inspire me to strive for beautiful womanhood and for the Lord’s best!  Thank you!

~

February also saw me…

Participating in an enjoyable ‘Literary Heroine Blog Party’ – does that not sound like wonderful fun?!  You can see my answers to the set questions over here!

Participating in a beautiful ‘Tea Cup Exchange’ – I am so very excited to share more about this sweet exchange in the coming month!  For now you can visit dear Stephanie’s blog to see what it is all about!

Starting Heartmade’s blog – oh my!  I have had such a lovely time adding new crafty posts to my new blog!
Heartmade is the small business that my mother, younger sister and I run together – we are passionate about creating quality handmade products with love and attention to detail – we focus mainly on sewn items such as bunting, traditional jointed teddy bears, soft toys, décor items,
etc. and paper items such as cards and tags.  Nancy is the crochet queen of our family and makes the most adorable owls on rustic twigs, decorated with beads and buttons in gorgeous colours and patterns!

A few of the lovely things I enjoyed creating this month…

Cards…I just love card making!

My wonderful mother and dearest friend celebrated her birthday on the 14th of February!  My mom is my inspiration and a very special part of my life!
My sisters and I had such a delightful morning organising, arranging, cooking, baking and decorating for the special meal we gave her that evening.
See more about our lovely dinner here

Beth and I baked a delicious RedVelvet cake…hmm!  It was so good!

Beth, Gabrielle and I enjoyed some SuperSpecial Sister Time – while it originally was my hope to have a slot each Sunday for our meetings, it just hasn’t happened that way…
Instead, I have found my weeks being filled with time for each little sister – I have been greatly encouraged to take the extra time and either bake or cook with one of them, or help them with a sewing or craft project where I can...or simply read them a story.  It has been so sweet to see how we have drawn closer to each other!

Such adorable girls – Sofia and Rebekah…  These two are so mischievous and yet here they look as if butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths!

And then there was some baking that took place…

Nancy loves spending time in the kitchen with her little sisters…

…And gardening and harvesting…

 More coming soon!

…As well as some bread baking…

Beth and Gabrielle have become our official bread bakers – we usually bake about twice a week, making about three loaves each time.   These two girls have taken on the responsibility with ease and I am just so impressed with them!

~ Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways.  When you eat the labour of yours hands, you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.”  Psalm 128:1-2 ~

~

Now my dear friends do share some of the happenings in your lives from the lovely month of February with me…
As always, it brings me great pleasure to hear from each of you and your comments brighten my day!

~

“Just as we cannot believe and love Him of whom we have heard, so we cannot grow in our faith and love Him if we do not learn more about Him.  We will not grow much in Godliness if we do not know much of what it means to be Godly.  We will not become more like Christ if we don’t know more of what Christ is like.” ~ Donald Whitney
